BMus Music - 1st Class Honours

I took my Music degree at the University of Sheffield. This course lasted three years full-time. Each year consists of 6 modules.

The marks obtained from the first year did not count towards the final result, but this year needed to be passed in order to continue studying. All the marks shown below are out of a total of 16. Results of 14+ are the work of Class 1 standard, 11-13 the work of Class 2.1 standard, 8-10 the work of Class 2.2 standard and so on.

This module introduced the students to word processing using Word.

Topics in the History of Music

This module introduced students to different historical periods in music through the analysis and discussion of three pieces of music. The works studied were:
  • Corelli - 12 Concerti Grossi
  • Verdi - Rigoletto
  • Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

This module introduced students to composing and performing professionally. I play the Oboe and my performance was a Telemann Oboe Sonata.

The final piece of coursework involved writing the first movement of a piano sonata in the style of Haydn.

This module looked at the different techniques which contemporary composers use and allowed the student to try out the various techniques for themselves.

This module studied the music in Elizabethan (I) England, particularly through the music of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd.

Extended Portfolio of Composition
(double module)

This double module consisted of the student composing 20 minutes worth of music, within 2-3 pieces, using a variety of ensembles.
