Assignment

Listen to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, following it with the score.
- List all the instruments used throughout the piece, stating the English name of the instrument, which section of the orchestra it belongs to and its range.
- Looking specifically at Spring Rounds (Rehearsal number 48-57 of Boosey & Hawkes edition - HPS 638). Describe how Stravinsky uses his orchestra to produce the overall effect of menace, excitement and primitiveness.
Two great composers of the baroque era were born in 1685 - J S Bach and Handel. Compare and contrast the men, their lives and their music.

To submit this work, please write in Word and send as an attachment. Where you wish to include music extracts, please do so, using an appropriate transferable music format.

This assignment will count as 20% towards your final mark for an entire course of 6 modules, unless you request otherwise.

It should be remembered that you need to have acquired at least 60% of your final marks from the assignments in the modules. You are reminded that not all modules contain assignments which can count towards your final result. However, ALL the assignments need to be completed in order to pass the course, whether or not the assignment mark is considered. The best course of action is to let all your assignments be put forward for your final mark. The top results will then be taken towards the 60% from assignments.

The remaining 40% is a project you will undertake at the end of the taught modules. This is in the form of either an extended essay and/or compositional portfolio (of 20 minutes) and/or completion of a series of harmony exercises. The precise questions will be given at the end of your taught modules.
