Fairly obviously when we talk of melody we are referring to a single line of music. This may be played on its own, by a single player, with accompaniment or without. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. When looking at the melody, that is all we look at. The way the melody rises and falls. If it is a song and there are words does the music somehow match the words? This is called word painting. An example would be where the words say something like: "and he rose to heaven on high", and the music reflects this by rising throughout the whole of this line, with the highest note of the phrase appearing on the word "high".
The melody can be used to give more meaning to words of songs. e.g. sighing and weeping can be signalled in music with a line which descends. Happiness can be signalled with a rising line. Reflections through a high section followed by a low section.
